Obscure movies can sometimes (read often) throw up some pleasant surprises in the form of songs that one did not know existed ! I keep discovering many forgotten gems almost on a daily basis.
Here is a wonderful discovery from a movie called “Dahej” (1950). The picturisation is as nice as the song itself. The picturisation shows Jayshree, the would be bride, surrounded by her sahelis and a choodiwaali (Hansa Wadkar) bringing chhoodis for her. It may indeed be news for the prsent generation, but choodiwaali in those days was quite an important salesperson, especially in rural and semi rural areas a few decades ago, and they had loyal clientele in many households, which they would visit regularly.
The song shows Kantakumari lip syncing in Shamshad Begam’s voice whereas Jayshree and Hansa Wadkar sing in their own voices. The delightful lyrics are penned by Shams Lucknowi. Music is composed by Vasant Desai.
